Air Jordan 13 “Doernbecher”
November 21, 2015
After being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, John Charles discovered a hidden talent: he could swallow seven pills at once. He can add that to a long list of talents that includes raising one eyebrow, gymnastics, wrestling, and his favorite of all, soccer.
You can also add “designing sneakers” to that list, as evidenced Air Jordan 13 he created for this year’s Doernbecher collection. You’ll find a long list of details on the shoe inspired by John’s life, and his battle against Crohn’s disease, seven pills, a cartoon character with a raised eyebrow, and his soccer number.
John also included details to represent that his life being bigger than Chron’s. His brother Jonah makes a cameo on the shoe’s sockliner, along with his German shepherd, Teagan. You’ll also find an Egyptian pyramid, which is the place he most wants to travel. John’s favorite foods have even been honored on his shoes, with the words CHICKEN and JO-JOS appearing on the lace tips.
The most powerful detail to be found on the shoe is located on the outsole: the word “Crohn’s.” John explained that, “When I’m walking, I want to literally stomp out the disease with every step.”
“I’ve come such a long way in the past year,” says John. “It hasn’t always been easy, but I just focus on the good stuff in life and that helps me stay happy. Throughout this experience, I’ve learned that you don’t know how strong you are until strong is the only choice.”
